Chronic Heartburn And How To Treat The Condition

Chronic heartburn has created problems in the lives of many people. This condition is frightening for some people because it causes a burning sensation in the throat and chest area. Some people are afraid of chronic heartburn because they think that they are suffering from a heart attack. A person is considered to be suffered from chronic heartburn when he or she experiences heartburn for two or more times a week. A qualified physician should check your condition for proper diagnosis and find the right treatment for your particular condition.

Chronic heartburn is very annoying because normally the condition happens when you go to sleep. You cannot get proper sleep at night and as a result you will lose your effectiveness on day time. You will feel tired all the time and cannot socialize properly with your friends and family. Furthermore, the condition will prevent you from enjoying your favorite foods. Of course, on top of all that, you will feel pains around your throat and chest. It will lead to a more serious condition if chronic heartburn is left unattended for a long period of time. Normally a typical heartburn can be treated with antacid tablets or syrups, but more extensive treatments are required when the condition is chronic.

Diet and medicine to treat chronic heartburn

Chronic heartburn happens because the stomach acid travels up to the esophagus. Our stomach is strong and can withstand the acid. In fact, it uses the acid to digest foods. However, the acid is to strong for other organs of the body. Therefore, when it moves to the esophagus, it will create a burning sensation, which is known as heartburn. Sometimes the pain is strong and disturbing. Normally this condition happens when a person is forty or more.

There are several ways that can be used to treat chronic heartburn. For one thing, the patient should not consume foods and drinks that can promote this condition. Foods and drinks with acid that can produce the symptoms should be avoided completely. Alcoholic beverages and those with caffeine are some examples as well as rich and creamy desserts. Furthermore, people who are suffering from heartburn should not eat late at night or eat before exercising.

If the chronic heartburn often happens when people are asleep, then elevating the head is a good strategy to keep the acid in the stomach. You can elevate the bed a little bit or use a special pillow for this purpose. In addition, doctors should give some medications to provide relief from the symptoms if the condition persists.
