Understand The Differences Between Heartburn And Heart Attack

Many people cannot differentiate between the symptoms of heartburn and heart attack. This poses a problem because they think that they are suffering from heart attack and thus they become afraid and panic. In reality, heartburn and heart attack are two different conditions and they are completely unrelated. In fact, the symptoms are different, only the location of the pain or discomfort is similar. Of course both names contain the word heart and this is another similarity that has caused confusion.

When someone is experiencing heart attack, he will feel pain around the chest. On the other hand, heartburn will cause burning sensation in the center of the chest. Besides these, there are other symptoms that can help you differentiate between heartburn and heart attack. Shortness of breath, nausea, sweating, and vomiting are common during heart attack, but they are not present in the case of heartburn. The most important thing is to consult your doctor immediately if you feel those symptoms. Heartburn and heart attack are not related, but if you are experiencing chronic heartburn, it indicates a serious condition and should be treated straight away.

There is another interesting fact when it comes to the relation between heartburn and heart attack. Some medications to treat and prevent heart attack can, unfortunately, increase the risk of heartburn. Therefore, it is highly recommended to consult a doctor concerning those medications used to treat heart conditions.

Since there is no relationship between heartburn and heart attack, it is essential to know the differences between the two illnesses. When someone is suffering from a heart attack, a common symptom that he experiences is tightness, pressure, or pain in the middle of the chest. Furthermore, the pain normally will spread to other areas, such as the neck, shoulders, and arms. Due to the location of the heart, the pain is predominant to the left side of the sufferer.

Heartburn symptoms are different as they manifest as a burning sensation in the rear of the breastbone and ribs. The sensation can radiate up into the throat and it normally begins after having a meal.

There are common things that appear on both patients of heartburn and heart attack. Both have poor dietary habits that affect their health negatively. In some cases, genetics play an important part, but in general poor dietary habit is the main culprit that causes heartburn and heart attack. The most important thing is to know the differences between the two illnesses and consult with a doctor immediately to get proper diagnosis and treatment.
